Abraham Pearce is confirmed on the roll of Army Scripture Readers (Wesleyan), which is signed by Owen S. Watkins, Senior Wesleyan Chaplain to the Expedition. In the margin he notes: ‘Mr. Pearce went to South Africa under the auspices of the Army Scripture Readers Association. He sailed October 21st 1899 and arrived back in England on June 26th 1900. During that period he served chiefly at the Orange River Base Hospital & at Zoutspan Drift. I have also seen passes etc. which testify that he has qualified for the two clasps claimed and I was myself in South Africa at that time.’
