A fine Nursing Service group of six awarded to Miss Doris Cuff, Superintendent of Chorley Nursing Division, St John’s Ambulance Brigade

Doris Lindsay Cuff first joined the Brigade in March 1915 in Preston (Fulwood Division) and worked as a VAD at Moor Park Hospital in Preston and then at the 2nd London General Hospital. On 25 February 1917 she was taken on to the strength of the St John Ambulance Brigade Hospital at Etaples, near Boulogne. She was at Etaples when the hospital was bombed in May and June 1918, and continued to work in the St. John Ambulance Brigade hospital when it was moved to Trouville until demobilisation on 17 January 1919. She then moved to Chorley and became Superintendent of the nursing division in 1920, remaining in Chorley for the rest of her career up until at least 1950. During World War II she served on the ARP Committee of Chorley Borough & Rural District, was in charge of the First Aid Post Personnel (female) and carried out the training of Casualty Services in he area. She also ran the POW Relatives Association and was in charge of Welfare of POW’s returning to the Chorley District. Miss Cluff died on 9 March 1955.
