Ancient Greek, Northern Greece, Thracian Dynasts, Koson, c. 50 BC, gold Stater, three togate figures advancing left, rev. eagle standing left on sceptre, holding wreath in claw, 8.54g/1h (RPC 1701; BMC p. 474, 48). Good very fine (£400-500)

The obverse design shows a consul escorted by two lictors and derives from a silver denarius of Brutus struck in 54 BC. This coin is believed to come from a hoard struck as military payroll for the army, which was defeated at Philippi in 42 BC; Brutus committed suicide after the loss
