Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung (1904-89), born in Leipzig, was influenced in his early career by the German Impressionists and Expressionists, but after 1928 he produced only abstract work in a very distinctive style. During World War II he served in the French Foreign Legion and became a French citizen in 1945, domiciled in Antibes
