William Alfred House was born in Portsmouth in July 1858 and entered the Royal Navy as a Domestic 3rd Class in March 1897. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Inflexible during the Egypt operations of 1882, including the bombardment of Alexandria, when he was employed as a Cook to Captain J. A. Fisher, R.N., afterwards the 1st Baron Fisher of Kilverstone in Norfolk. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in September 1894, House was finally pensioned ashore in April 1902.
