Alfred Robert Limbrick was born at Poplar, Middlesex in December 1857 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1873. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Temeraire in the Egypt operations of 1882, including the bombardment of Alexandria, and attained the rate of Petty Officer 1st Class in June 1885. More significantly, he was appointed a Gunner, R.N. in June 1887, which advancement led to him being commissioned as a Lieutenant in August 1911, the year before his retirement. Limbrick was recalled in August 1914 and served throughout the War at shore establishments in the U.K., once again being placed on the Retired List in August 1919, this time in the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. He died in February 1939, aged 82 years.
