Orlando Herbert Morrice Butland was born at Falmouth, Cornwall in January 1876 and entered the Royal Navy as a Domestic 3rd Class in February 1894. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Bonaventure off China during the Boxer Rebellion, was advanced to Chief Cook in November 1907 and received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1909. During the Great War, Butland served aboard the battleship Conqueror from August 1914 until February 1917, including the Battle of Jutland, and afterwards came ashore to the training establishment Impregnable where he was advanced to Instructor in Cookery in February 1918. He retired in the following year.
