William Light was born at Wilcove, Cornwall in January 1893 and entered the Royal Navy as a Writer 3rd Class in September 1892. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Highflyer during the Somaliland operations of 1903 and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in September 1907. Appointed a Warrant Writer while serving at Vivid I in October 1915, he ended the War in the repair shipVictorious and was appointed a Commissioned Writer in June 1919. Light’s final advancement was to Paymaster Lieutenant in January 1923.
