John Herbert Clarke was born at Nottingham in May 1895 and entered the Royal Navy as a “hostilities only” man on 1 December 1915. Three weeks later, after attending Vernon, he joined H.M.S. King George V, aboard which battleship he served for the remainder of the War, and was present at the Battle of Jutland. He was demobilised in February 1919.
