Robert Collymore initially served in the ranks of King Edward’s Horse and the 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, before being commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, London Regiment on 2 January 1915. He was promoted Lieutenant on 1 July 1915, and temporary Captain on 22 September 1915, and served during the Great War on the Western Front from January 1917.
