Medaille Militaire: ‘Corporal Joseph Milligan, 8th Company 6th Battalion, Royal Artillery. Present at the Battle of Alma, and served in the trenches, and was present at all bombardments.’

Joseph Milligan was born near Ballymena, County Antrim, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Lisburn on 25 February 1846, aged 25, a labourer by trade. He was briefly promoted to Bombardier on 1 April 1858 but was tried by Court Martial on 18 May 1858 and reduced to Gunner, in which rank he was finally discharged on 5 May 1868.

Sold with copied discharge papers which confirm medals but not clasp for Alma. This however is fully confirmed on the medal roll and by virtue of his Medaille Militaire citation.
