Edward A. Stewart, a native of Hull, attested for the East Yorkshire Regiment and served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1916. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in support of the 17th (Northern) Division’s attack on Fricourt. Stewart’s Company, “D” Company, at Bécordel-Becort, took over the British front line shortly after zero, and went forward for the second phase of the assault at 2:30 p.m., suffering high casualties from machine gun fire which prevented them from reaching their objectives.

Stewart was aged 19 at the time of his death, and is buried in Fricourt New Military Cemetery, France.
