Henry Lane was born in Exeter in 1869 and attested for the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry at Bodmin on 13 January 1893. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from 1 February 1894 to 20 September 1899, ands then in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 September 1899 to 30 May 1901, being employed as part of the Bearer Company, No. 11 British Field Hospital (hence entitled to the Defence of Ladysmith clasp). He was discharged, medically unfit, on 13 November 1901, after 8 years and 302 days’ service.
