Jesse Norman was born in Cannington, near Bridgwater, Somerset, on 17 January 1836. He attested at Woolwich for the Royal Horse Artillery on 18 November 1856, arriving in Bombay with “D” Troop on 29 December 1857 to take part in the quelling of the Mutiny. His unit soon saw action at the skirmish at Zirapore on 29 December 1858, and the subsequent affair at Chubbra where Somerset’s attack was met by 3,000 rebel horse who charged the small British force; it fell to the Gunners of “D” Troop to successfully reverse the affair through rapid and effective fire.

Promoted Bombardier on 14 April 1859, Corporal on 5 February 1861, and Sergeant on 27 November 1861, Norman returned home to England and married a young lady who was recorded in 1861 as a waitress at the King’s Arms Hotel in Dorchester. Further raised Battery Sergeant Major on 13 May 1867, Norman was sent to Woolwich in 1871 and awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving with the Riding Establishment - itself originated from the Riding House Troop Horse Artillery of 1808 and originally formed as a military equestrian training unit. Discharged in 1886, Norman was later awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with annuity. He died at Dorchester in 1910.
