W. Harris served during the Boer War with the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and is recorded as wounded at Driefontein on 10 March 1900. It was here at the Driefontein ridge that the Boers under General Christiaan de Wet made a last stand before their retreat to Bloemfontein.
