D.C.M. London Gazette 17 September 1917:

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in assisting his officer to clear the road of dead and wounded men and horses at a moment when his battery had been thrown into great confusion, coming under heavy fire whilst changing position. His coolness and energy were of great assistance to his officer in controlling the remaining vehicles under fire.’

Ernest H. Simmonds was a native of Leytonstone, London, and served with the Royal Field Artillery in France from 13 July 1915.
