Hammer Price:
£15,000

Charles II (1660-1685), Proof or presentation Two Guineas, 1664, by J. Roettier, first bust, elephant below, 16.75g/6h (WR –; cf. MCE 32; S 3334). Extremely fine, extremely rare (£10,000-15,000)

Although not listed by Wilson and Rasmussen, this is clearly a well struck and carefully finished piece. The dies are well centred, the beaded borders well within the rims and the fields of superior proof-like finish, suggesting that comparison with the proof or presentation five guineas of 1670 (WR 48) would not be amiss. That it should occur for the first year of the denomination’s issue may also be significant
