James Conway Victor was born in 1792, and joined the Royal Engineers as a Second Lietenant in June 1810. He served in the Peninsula from December 1812 until the end of the war, including the battles of the Nive, Orthes and Toulouse. He became Colonel of the Royal Engineers on 20 June 1854, retired on full pay as a Major-General the following December, and died at Edinburgh on 4 February 1864.
