James William Newton was born in the Parish of Widley, Hampshire, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Gosport on 24 April 1884, aged 18, a cowman by trade. He served abroad in Egypt from 30 August 1884 to 6 June 1887, including the Nile Expedition of 1884-85. He afterwards served at Malta until 19 December 1889, and then at Hong Kong until 14 April 1892, when he returned to the U.K. He was discharged at Gosport on 2 May 1896.
