S. E. Baker served on the North West Frontier in 1935 with the 81st (Sphinx) Field Battery, Royal Artillery. Assigned to halt the repeated harassment of working parties repairing the Mohinand-Gandad road, he likely witnessed the first operational use of tanks in India. Following fierce fighting around Nahakki, the majority of the 2,000 marauding tribesmen were driven off, with the British later convening a jirga to establish peace.
