William Absolom Earl lived at 27 Carlisle Street, Sheffield, and attested for the Railway Operating Division, Royal Engineers, on 11 December 1915. Posted to Egypt from 1917, his Army Service Record notes that he contracted malaria and spent time in hospital. Recovered, he was raised skilled shunter in November 1919 and returned home in February 1920.
Ernest Albert Meredith was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, in 1888, and served with the Royal Engineers in France from 30 July 1916.
