Francis Abbott was born in 1897 the son of John and Elizabeth Abbott of 27 Water Street, Neath, Glamorganshire. A collier by trade, he attested for service in November 1914, and landed in France with the 13th (Service) (1st North Wales) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers in the 38th (Welsh) Division, on 1 December 1915. He participated in the Division’s attack on Mametz Wood in July 1916 and later in the assault on Pilckem Ridge in July and August 1917. He was killed in a trench raid near Hamel on 21 June 1918, one of two casualties of the battalion on that day. He is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery France.
