Edmund Hatton was born on 20 July 1918 and attested for the Army Catering Corps on 15 September 1939. Appointed Cook and attached to the 2nd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, he witnessed extensive service in North Africa, Italy and North West Europe, before joining the British Army of the Rhine. Demobilised on 29 March 1946, his testimonial notes:
‘Has been cook in charge of a Company cook house. He has at all times performed his duties capably and conscientiously. He has been a punctual and clean soldier, has shown a real interest in his work. Completely honest.’
