Joseph Murphy was born in St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, around 1871. A former member of the 5th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifles (Militia), he attested for the Royal Artillery on 9 June 1890 and witnessed extensive service in India with the 10th Field Battery, Royal Artillery, from 10 March 1891 to 28 March 1898. Posted to the North West Frontier from 1897-98 and South Africa from 7 November 1899 to 26 June 1902 with 4th Battery, R.F.A., he was discharged in August 1902. Returning to civilian employment as a general labourer, Murphy died at Baxter Gate, Doncaster, on 6 December 1946.
