Stone Age, Mesolithic flint axe, 7,000-5,000 BC, 140mm x 57mm x 32mm, core axe of ‘Thames Pick’ type with a pointed butt and rounded cutting edge, asymmetrical in cross-section with a high ridge (cf. McAlpine Collection, Ashmolean 1987, p.55, 3.1). Very fine with a small chip to the cutting edge, extremely rare; the dark colour of the flint can be seen in two chips under the thick crust of cortex that has formed as a patina £600-£800
found in September 2023 at Bottisham, near Cambridge
This type of axe would have been hafted and used for woodworking and felling trees.
