Lord Merlyn Rees (1920-2006), a wartime Spitfire pilot and squadron-leader, served as MP for Leeds South, 1963-92. He became Labour Party spokesman on Northern Ireland after the abolition of Stormont in 1972, served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from March 1974 to September 1976 and then as Home Secretary until the General Election in 1979.
