A number of gold sovereigns, thought to be about 17,000 pieces, were issued to British military personnel taking part in Operation Granby during the Gulf War, 17 January to 26 February 1991. Some of the coins were used during the War, mostly by RAF crews shot down over enemy territory; the balance, including this coin, was returned to the Ministry of Defence after the conflict
