George Hotel, High street, Shirehampton. The Bristol Brewery Georges & Co Ltd, incorporated in February 1888, its centenary year; the business formerly known as the Philip George Bristol Brewery and George’s & Co, dated back to 1788 when Philip George (1750-1828) bought Rickett’s Porter Brewery in Bath street. It was the largest firm of independent brewers in Bristol in the 19th century but was subsumed by Messrs Courage in 1961 and closed in 1999; further details are sold with the lot.
