M.M. 300920 Corporal, D.L.I., dated 16 October 1917 (Third battle of Ypres) ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations. This N.C.O. when his seniors had become casualties, took charge of a platoon, and encouraging the men by his own personal example, succeeded in getting the stores they were carrying up to their destination. On the first day of the operations he made three separate journeys to the final objective with supplies, etc., and brought back wounded with him every time. These journeys were made over ground swept by very heavy shell fire’.

He took over the duties of Sergt.-Major after the C.S.M. was wounded, and by his untiring energy and dauntless courage was the greatest assistance to the one remaining Officer throughout the battle’.
