Arthur Basil Mawer was born on 4 December 1888, the son of Harry Mawer of Putney Hill, London. Educated at Charterhouse, he was commissioned from Cadet in the O.T.C., becoming a 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 19 September 1914. Promoted directly to Temporary Captain of the 13th Battalion on 2 January 1915, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 25 August 1915. During the course of the war he was wounded. Post-war, in the Army of Occupation he served as Acting Major, September 1919-February 1920. He relinquished his commission, retaining the rank of Captain, on 14 February 1920 and was admitted to the Reserve of Officers with the rank of Captain on 1 July 1921. He ceased to be an Officer of the Reserve in 1938.
