John Hanna was born at Carrickmore, Ireland, and enlisted into the 58th Regiment at Glasgow on 15 September 1842, aged 24 years. He sailed from Deptford on the Blundell on 2 March 1844, bound for Sydney, Australia, where he arrived on 31 July. He left Sydney on 10 April 1845, on the Slains Castle and arrived at Auckland on 22 April. He was discharged at Auckland on 31 January 1857. His name appears on the 1902 New Zealand campaign Veterans Roll.
