804 medals to this regiment, comprising 200 for the 2nd Kaffir War 1846-47, 237 for the 3rd Kaffir War 1850-53, and 364 to those who fought in both the 2nd and 3rd Kaffir Wars.
James Alcorn was born at Ayr, Ayrshire, and attested for the 91st Regiment at Edinburgh on 5 November 1838, aged 18 years. He served abroad at the Cape of Good Hope, 6 years 8 months, in the Mediterranean, 2 years 10 months, and served with the 1st Battalion during the Kaffir War of 1846-47 (Medal). This Battalion left South Africa in January 1848 although a good number transferred to the Reserve Battalion, which had arrived in 1842, and subsequently took part in the 3rd Kaffir War. He was discharged at Cephalonia on 20 November 1857, and was also in possession of the L.S. & G.C. medal. Sold with copy discharge papers.
