John Jones, who was born at Ross, Herefordshire and enlisted at Crumlin, was first embarked for active service in early November 1914. Having been advanced to Sergeant, he died of wounds on 3 June 1917, while serving in ‘D’ Company, 2nd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment. He was buried in the Duisans British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France:

‘Sergeant John Jones, Monmouthshire Regiment, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jones of Baron Street, Uak, died of wounds in France on 3 June. Official notification has been received by the relatives, also letters of condolence and sympathy from the Army Chaplain, the Sister of the clearing station, where the deceased died, and the Usk U.D.C. He volunteered for service on 5 August 1914. He was married as recently as 10 January last, his bride being Miss Francis Hudson of Boston, Lincolnshire. He was 26 years of age. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who lost another son earlier in the year. A third son, Private William Jones, is still serving with the Monmouthsire Regiment’ (The Free Press of Monmouthsire refers).
