The White Star Line S.S. Cymric was a passenger liner of 13,000 tons, built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, launched in 1897 and made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York in 1898. She made two voyages to South Africa with troops for the Boer War. During the period 1904-14 she was placed on the Liverpool-Boston route. On 29 April 1916 the ship was hit by three torpedoes from the German submarine U-20 and was eventually to sink on 9 May with the loss of five lives.
