Percival Edwin James Thomas was born in Cape Town on 5 December 1891. A commercial traveller by occupation, he attested for service in the Union with the S.A.M.C. on 29 February 1916 and service in East Africa on 11 August 1916. Entering East Africa on 23 August 1916, he was, in the following year, struck down with malaria and returning to South Africa in May 1917, was discharged on 23 October 1917 as ‘being permanently unfit for tropical service but temporarily unfit for non-tropical service’. In the Second World War he attested for service in the South African Air Force, aged 50 years, for which service he was awarded the War and Africa Service Medals.

Harold Percy Thomas was born on 20 October 1921, the son of P. E. J. Thomas. An apprentice motor mechanic by occupation, he volunteered for service with the Union Defence Force in November 1940 and was posted to the South African Education Corps. He was discharged on 18 November 1945. Both groups sold with copied service papers.
