James Fuller was born in Maidstone, Kent, and attested for the Royal Marines at Brighton on 31 August 1836, a tinman and brazier by trade, aged 18 years 8 months. He served as a Private R.M. aboard H.M.S. Larne from March 1837 to July 1842. During her time in China, the Larne only took part in one incident when, on 7 January 1841 she was present at the bombardment, landing and capture of Chuenpee Hill Forts, and the fortifications at Tycocktow, both situated guarding the seaward approaches to Canton on the Bogue, also known as the Bocca Tigris. Fuller was discharged on 11 July 1842, having ‘paid the Regulated Sum of Twenty Pounds and per Admiralty Order dated 7 July 1842’. Sold with copy attestation papers.
