‘On 13 March 1884 in the Sudan, Lieutenant Marling risked his life to save that of a private of the Royal Sussex Regiment who had been shot. The private fell off the lieutenant’s horse as soon as he was put up in front, so, although the enemy were pressing closely, Lieutenant Marling carried the wounded man to a place of comparative safety’ (Ref.
