John Painter was born on 6 June 1853 at Cricklade, Wiltshire, and joined the Royal Navy on his 18th birthday. He served aboard Hecla from January 1882 until December 1884, and then in Defiance until December 1887 when he transferred to Plymouth at the end of his engagement (ADM 159/2).
