58 other ranks of the Medical Staff Corps were present at Abu Klea, of whom only three men had been present in the 1882 and 1884 campaigns.
William Littlefair was born in the Parish of Reeth, near Richmond, Yorkshire, and enlisted for General Service at Manchester on 18 September 1879, a grocer by trade, aged 21. He served in Egypt in 1882 where he ‘was employed in the Cholera Camp at Ismalia and exhibited great zeal and care in attending on the sick, during the whole period of the epidemic.’ He afterwards served in the operations near Suakin in 1884, and in the Nile Expedition 1884-85, including the battle of Abu Klea. He was discharged on 17 September 1891.
