Gowlands Lotion, a half skit note denominated 55, ND (c.1800), serial number 55, advertising Gowlands Lotion, for complexion, sold at 55 Long Acre, London, with a very passable copy of the Bank of England vignette but showing an apothecary in place of Britannia, fine, rare and of Jane Austen fame!

Gowlands Lotion was so well known at the time that Jane Austen actually mentions it in Persuasion. It purported to be an anti-aging lotion, and Austens character Sir Walter Elliot, a conceited aristocrat, swears by it.
