John Cyril Francis was appointed Lieutenant in the 5th Bombay Native Infantry on 12 February 1876; Captain, 12 February 1887. Captain Francis served in the Afghan War in 1878-9 (Medal). Served in the Soudan campaign in 1885, and was present in the engagements at Hasheen and the Tofrek zereba and at the destruction of Temai (Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star).
