Alexander Harvie Anderson was serving as a Captain in the Royal Engineers (Volunteers), Submarine Miners, Clyde Division at the time of going out to South Africa, where he served in Cape Colony from February to May 1902. Advanced to Major in December 1912, he was serving in the Electric Lights Company at Greenock, Renfrewshire on the eve of hostilities, and subsequently gained appointment as an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel.
