Walter Montgomery was born in Ashby St. Ledgers, Warwickshire, in May 1886, and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker in September 1906. Coming ashore as a Stoker 1st Class ‘time expired’ in September 1911, he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve, and was quickly recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Posted to Benbow Battalion, Royal Naval Division, he was among those interned in Holland after the retreat from Antwerp. Repatriated in January 1919, Montgomery was demobilised in June 1920; sold with copied service record.
