The Uniform Coinage of India, British Imperial Period: Patterns, George VI, nickel Pattern Quarter-Rupee, 1946, Calcutta, unsigned [by P.W.M. Brindley], crowned bust left, george vi king emperor, rev. tiger walking left in a prowling stance, groundline below, date and india in large letters above, quarter rupee above, no mint-mark, paw rupiya pao rupiya in Devanagri and Urdu in exergue, edge grained, 19.2mm, 2.96g/12h (Prid. –; SW –; KM. –). Brilliant mint state, of the highest rarity; no other specimens believed known £3,000-£4,000

Owner’s envelope, “Date and INDIA above lion, values beneath, larger lettering”.

XRF analysis shows the metal content as 99.5% nickel, with traces of iron, manganese and copper. Interestingly, this coin displays one clear relief diamond or ‘pyramis’ between the n and d of india (see footnote to Lot 1582)
