Markyate (partly in Bedfordshire), Richard Barnes, Farthing, in silver, 18mm, 1.28g/9h (GO 73A.2, this piece; N 2230; BW. 140). A later cast from moulds made from a worn specimen on a large flan, small test mark adjacent to the e in markett, otherwise very fine and much as made, toned, an intriguing piece £100-£150
This lot was sold as part of a special collection, Hertfordshire 17th Century Tokens from the Collection of the late David Griffiths.

S. Andrews Collection, Morton & Eden Auction 3, 20-1 May 2003, lot 526 (part).
The large flan and misaligned dies infer that this piece was made at the same time as the companion GO 73A.3 (Luton Museum); the ‘stop’ after markett is in fact a fault on the die. An XRF analysis kindly undertaken by Dr Gary Oddie confirms that the silver fineness is approximately 85%, and a copy of the analysis is sold with the lot
