William Allen was born in 1855 at Oakhampton, Devon, and enlisted on the island of Alderney on 17 October 1870, aged 15. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with gratuity in July 1888 after nearly 18 years’ service, this being his sole entitlement.
