William Joseph Cartwright was born in the Parish of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Longton on 6 April 1897. Following service in the U.K. with 84 Field Battery, he served overseas in Egypt and the Sudan with 32 Field Battery, R.F.A., from 20 December 1897 to 7 November 1898; in India until 26 September 1899; and in South Africa from 27 September 1899, initially with the Indian Ammunition Column until posted to a 1-pounder Maxim Battery. He was discharged in South Africa, on payment of £18 on 10 November 1902.

Sold with copied discharge papers which confirm all medals.
