Sergeant Joseph Mitchell served with 6/11 Battalion, Royal Artillery, in the Crimea. He was awarded to D.C.M. for the Battle of Inkermann on 5 November 1854, and was slightly wounded at the assault on the Quarries on 7 June 1855. He was also awarded a Knight’s badge of the Legion of Honour.
