Neil Boggam was born in the Parish of Ardagh in Co. Mayo, Ireland. A Farrier by occupation, he enlisted into the 16th Light Dragoons at Manchester on 12 January 1805, for unlimited service, then being 22 years of age. With the regiment he served in the Peninsular War and thence in the Waterloo Campaign. He was discharged at Romford on 17 April 1822 as a consequence of ‘weakness and bad health - also weakness and rheumatic pains in the right arm in consequence of dislocation of the shoulder, occasioned by a fall when in the execution of his duty in Portugal in the year 1810’. Published rolls confirm the above clasps plus the addition of ‘Fuentes d’Onor’. Sold with copied discharge papers and notes. N.B. Spelling of name varies - ‘Neil Boggam’ on medal; ‘Neal Boggan’ on papers; ‘Boggan’ on Waterloo roll; ‘Baggam’ on Foster’s roll.
