William Moffit was born in the Parish of Inismacsaint Cross (?), near Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. a Shoe-maker by trade, he entered the 88th Foot on 24 July 1809. His papers record that he was wounded three times; ‘at Ciudad Rodrigo (slight), another at Badajoz (severe) and a third at the battle of Vittoria (severe)’. As a consequence of these wounds and being time expired he was discharged on 16 March 1816, receiving the sum of £3-8s-4d as ‘Marching Allowance to Enneskell (?), Ireland. The wounds he received are detailed in his papers, ‘He has the mark of a ball having entered on the posterior part of his left side, passed across his back and extracted at the right side. He has also the mark of another having entered the external part of the left thigh of having passed through and out on the internal side of the same limb. There likewise appears slight marks of a wound from small shot on the right leg’. His five clasps are confirmed on the medal roll. Curiously he was not awarded the clasp for Ciudad Rodrigo despite being wounded there. Sold with copied discharge papers and research. A regimental medal (Balmer R523c) was awarded to this man (surname spelt ‘Moffett’).
